i don't think Rowling would ever have given Neville such an important role. He's a mediocre wizard and will not change overnight to kill the most powerful wizard of all times.
Harry is the only with the power to finish Riddle off if you ask me...

harry is a horcrux and voldemort kill him but he come to the life thanks to the resurrection stone. voldemort attack him again but the elder wand protec him and the spell return to voldemort and he dead.
