asmallworld.net: Elite Social Network, or Facebook Roadkill?
I started getting emails from asmallworld.net, one of the social networks I belong to prompt activity. Status updates, activity updates etc. They didn't used to send those. I don't like it, it feels like spam. So why did they start? Weren't they growing just fine without it? Could be, but pretty much everybody I know there, is now on Facebook and that's where I connect with them. They don't show up on Comscore but here is their last years Alexa graph.
You have to take Alexa with a grain of salt, but it says their pageview are half of what they used to be before Facebook opened its platform. I wonder what other social networks are feeling the same pinch?

The same can be said of all generalist social networks. I think all non-vertical communities are under the same threat. "Elite" is not a vertical. Neither is "Turkish".

Asmallworld seems to be dying as most users are using Facebook more and more and more

Yeah, but Facebook is the next to go. The application interface will the end of it, since it will make the site more and more cluttered. Facebook is now where ASmallWorld was about a year and a half ago. Facebook is dead.

We can judge the popularity of these sites by seeing their ranking in http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Alexa. Orkut has been steadily rising on the Alexa charts but MySpace is still significantly bigger than Orkut.com.

This is the second time I'm reading your blog and I found both of them by totally accident, what a coincidence. Dunno about asw, trying to get an invite from someone here in London but my sis-in-law is member and she speaks highly of it (btw she has hundreds of FB friends and heavily uses FB as well). She keeps saying that ASW has tons of posh ads and must be earning a lot from those ads. Really curious to see but I guess they will have difficulty to cope with FB. I like the idea of having a bad credibility if someone you've invited refuses to join the website though.
Would appreciate an invite if you still have some left...

Completely agree with the author that ASW has become much less exclusive..Although there are site out there, which don't advertise at all (and I think a true elite network should be stealth from the general public eye) such as Diamond lounge, ELIXIO or chrome NYC
