I started getting emails from asmallworld.net, one of the social networks I belong to prompt activity. Status updates, activity updates etc. They didn't used to send those. I don't like it, it feels like spam. So why did they start? Weren't they growing just fine without it? Could be, but pretty much everybody I know there, is now on Facebook and that's where I connect with them. They don't show up on Comscore but here is their last years Alexa graph.
You have to take Alexa with a grain of salt, but it says their pageview are half of what they used to be before Facebook opened its platform. I wonder what other social networks are feeling the same pinch?
The same can be said of all generalist social networks. I think all non-vertical communities are under the same threat. "Elite" is not a vertical. Neither is "Turkish".

Asmallworld seems to be dying as most users are using Facebook more and more and more

Yeah, but Facebook is the next to go. The application interface will the end of it, since it will make the site more and more cluttered. Facebook is now where ASmallWorld was about a year and a half ago. Facebook is dead.

We can judge the popularity of these sites by seeing their ranking in http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Alexa. Orkut has been steadily rising on the Alexa charts but MySpace is still significantly bigger than Orkut.com.

This is the second time I'm reading your blog and I found both of them by totally accident, what a coincidence. Dunno about asw, trying to get an invite from someone here in London but my sis-in-law is member and she speaks highly of it (btw she has hundreds of FB friends and heavily uses FB as well). She keeps saying that ASW has tons of posh ads and must be earning a lot from those ads. Really curious to see but I guess they will have difficulty to cope with FB. I like the idea of having a bad credibility if someone you've invited refuses to join the website though.
Would appreciate an invite if you still have some left...

Completely agree with the author that ASW has become much less exclusive..Although there are site out there, which don't advertise at all (and I think a true elite network should be stealth from the general public eye) such as Diamond lounge, ELIXIO or chrome NYC

Hey,
Monaco Motion has just hit the elite social network by storm. This is definately the trendiest site to be a part of no joke, and I am not just saying that because I was accepted for admission!! Haha. If you don't believe me check it out for yourself at http://www.monacomotion.com
The site is really cool because they incorporate every possible social networking tool in a single online arena: blogs, forums, social groups, games, you name it, all the while maintaining an extremely exclusive atmosphere. Best of all the site screens members through a really cool application process that is based on one's interests. There is a ten dollar application fee in USD, but if you get in its definately worth every penny.

Hi,
Would you be able to send me an invite for ASW? I am a member of another invite-only site that I can send you an invite for.

No site on the internet can match the exclucivity of Monaco Motion!! I mean this site is the real deal! Where as other sites are taking the gamail approach, and trying to have members invite members in order to boost membership, Monaco Motion has stuck to its core values of elite membership. The site requires those interested to apply for membership. This is an addition to the $10.00 USD application fee required, which I am sure has been established to make sure only interested applicants apply. Needless to say, I was accepted :) Check it out at http://www.monacomotion.com

Really. social networking for rich people. I must say. all the super wealthy people I know.
1) don't know how to use computers
2) have assistants who use computers for them and keep tabs of their calendar.
I know the younger posh set is all about this new fangled poky thingy of social networking. What happened to just getting tipsy at Oak 1, or am I dating myself.
I should end this midnight comment with immortal words. "I won't be a member of any club that will have me as a member" - paraphrasing Charlie Chaplin. It's never truer then today.

I think that aSmallWorld has taken a big hit since Affluence.org launched. They are smaller, but much more exclusive and require their users to have a validated net worth of US$3 million minimum. It all millionaires and billionaires on Affluence.org instead of all the hotel workers and waitresses you find on ASW.
